The high priestess is the knower of the unknown. She sits in the world of dreams, secret knowledge, and deepest spiritual mystery. She is passive, patient, and receptive to deeper knowledge. She uses her intuition and imagination to guide her in the dark recesses of the unconscious mind and soul. If the high priestess shows up in a reading, she is telling you to look beyond the obvious, to unlock the potential of your intuition or your dreams for the answer to your question. My high priestess is depicted as a wise child. She can see what others cannot, and has never learned to doubt her intuition. You can see the weight of many lifetimes in her eyes. The high priestess is traditionally represented sitting between two pillars, representing the light and dark sides of the soul. I have placed her between human "pillars" of fire and ice, each holding a crystal ball. She is also traditionally associated with the moon. In my image, she takes the place of the new moon or dark moon, which is often associated with the most mysterious aspects of femininity. The snake around her neck whispers to her the truth of good and evil, and the apples in her lap represent secret knowledge. The figs represent knowledge before thought, because fig trees flower before they show leaves. She sits passively, with all of the answers, and urges you to find your own answers inside yourself.
