The five of cups is about grief, loss, and goodbyes. The loss may be of a person, either through death or the breakup of a relationship. It may be the loss of hope. This is a card of grief and depression. The sorrow may not always match the event, and sometimes this card is associated with "crying over spilled milk." But it may also represent a very real loss. There is a plus side to this card. Although the grief must be experienced, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it will be possible to work through the sadness to a happier tomorrow. If the five of cups appears in a reading, it suggests a loss or depression. It also promises, though, that the sadness will not last forever.

My five of cups is a woman alone in a dark room. On the floor are two cups of wine that have been spilled. In her sorrow, the woman in this card spills a third cup of wine, uncaring, down her leg. She watches the wine drip with the numbness of grief. On the windowsill are two full cups, but she does not see them. Rather than gather what wine she has left, she pours it out on the altar of her sadness. But outside the window, the sun is out and there are apple blossoms on the tree, symbolizing hope for the future. She will have to move through her grief or depression, but her life is waiting for her when she does.
